A Survival guide to the Prado Museum is a guide for the untrained and for those that believe they don’t understand art.

In this guidebook you will find a selection of commented paintings. This is a selection of paintings that I appreciate, enjoy or just plain love in the museum. The Thyssen, as it is normally referred to, is Madrid’s third most important art museum and just across the street from the Prado Museum. It is also most likely the best and most complete private collection of art in the world.

Undoubtedly there are other great private art collections in the world; however, this is the only one that builds a chronological narrative with outstanding examples from each period and very few gaps. Indeed, visiting the museum is like strolling through the last 600 years of art history. No other private collection presents anything similar.

These are the paintings included in the guidebook:

1. Adam and Eve by Hans Baldunf Grien 2. Hercules at the Court of Omphale by Hans Cranach 3. The Nymph at the Fountain by Lucas CRanach the Elder 4. The Meeting of Tamar and Judah by Tintoretto 5. The Love Letter by François Clouet 6. Lot and his Daughters by Orazio Gentileschi 7. The Annunciation by El Greco 8. Saint Catherine of Alexandria by Caravaggio 9. Erotica in the Prado is a guide to Eros in the Prado Museum that will take you on a tour of some of the most relevant paintings that share the common subject of erotic arousal.

The selection in this guidebook includes 30 works that are part of the permanent collection of the museum; and the only inclusion criterion was that the painting or sculpture presented erotic associations.

You may be surprised at how little our general attitudes towards erotica have changed in the last 2000 years. Likewise, you may be surprised at how little erotica has changed too; there really is nothing new under the sun, and it’s all been done before.

These are the paintings included in the guidebook:
